The Museum of Hanko presents, researches and preserves the history of Hanko since 1909. The Museum of Hanko is located in the old factory facilities of Manner’s mechanical workshop.
“Glimpse – Visit Hanko in the 1870s” takes guests to late 19th century Hanko. The town of Hanko turns 150 years in 2024. Finland’s first winter harbour and the Hanko–Hyvinkää railway were built in 1873. These were important steps in the industrialisation of Finland and its development into an independent country.
When the town was founded there were only the ruins of the old fortress town and a fishing village. The town of Hanko was built from scratch. In our exhibition visitors get to known early Hanko – its inhabitants, buildings, challenges and dreams. The exhibition features watercolour paintings by Alex R. Spoof from 1876, which portray landscapes in Hanko.
