Kitesurfing is an exciting and technically challenging sport that rewards an active enthusiast. Entrepreneur Niclas Sergelius from Hanko says he personally discovered kitesurfing in 2018. “I saw surfers in Hanko and abroad being carried quickly across the water by a large kite while jumping in the air. It looked fun and thrilling. In kitesurfing, the learning curve never really ends. At the same time, you can practice it year-round – in the summer on water and in winter on ice or snow,” Sergelius praises.
In the summer season, Hanko, according to Sergelius, ranks among the best kitesurfing destinations in the world. “Hanko’s location makes it especially ideal. Since Hanko is at the tip of a peninsula and surfers prefer wind blowing toward the shore, there is always a beach suitable for the sport. Almost all wind directions allow for kitesurfing. Wind blowing toward the shore also increases safety.”
Moreover, Hanko’s sandy and shallow beaches are perfect for beginners.“When you fall, you don’t have to keep swimming. If you stand in water up to your knees, it makes learning much easier and faster.” Sergelius highlights Tuuliniemi and Silversand, as well as the beach near Tulliniemi and Tylö’s sauna factory, as the best spots for kitesurfing in Hanko. The town’s compact size makes practicing easy: when the wind changes, you can switch beaches with just a 5–10 minute drive.
Although rental options for equipment are limited, beginners often start with an instructor or borrowed gear.
“An active enthusiast can manage well with a single versatile kite. The kite does almost all the work – it lifts you onto the water and carries you forward.” Kitesurfing combines physical activity, maritime awareness, and a sense of community.
“In Hanko, these elements come together in a unique way – year-round,” concludes Niclas Sergelius.
