Hangö Sailing Club, familiarly known as HSF, is one of Finland’s oldest sailing clubs and a vital part of the city’s maritime soul. Founded in 1906, the club has kept the traditions of sailing alive for over a century.
Commodore Mikael Lindqvist sees HSF primarily as a community keeper. “HSF is more than just a club – it’s a culture where the sea, tradition, and collaboration come together.” The club’s most famous event is the Hanko Regatta, which each summer brings together sailors, friends, and the city itself. “The Regatta is a moment when Hanko truly comes alive. It shows the power of the community at its best,” Lindqvist emphasizes.
He also highlights that HSF’s strength lies in continuity. Many members participate throughout their entire lives. “Young members learn from the older ones, and traditions are passed forward. That is the very essence of HSF.”
Sailing as a mindset
For many people in Hanko, the sea has been present since childhood – time was spent in boats, on the ice and along the shores. The sea was a natural environment for living. In Hanko, boats and sailing are part of everyday life for many. Lindqvist describes sailing more as a way of thinking than as a sport.“On a boat, you have to be calm and present – everything depends on cooperation. The wind may change, plans may shift, but you always move forward.”
HSF today and tomorrow
HSF organizes competitions, training and events for all ages. According to the commodore, the goal is to keep sailing accessible to everyone.
“Our task is to inspire new members to join and to ensure that the tradition continues strongly.”The club is also an important part of Hanko’s summer and local culture. “HSF brings together sailors and townspeople. It is a maritime community, not just a sports club. When a boat moves quietly by the power of the wind, there is something deeply calming about it – a moment when you understand why the sea has drawn people to it generation after generation.”
Looking toward the horizon
Mikael Lindqvist views the future with optimism. “HSF is living through a strong period. New members are joining, interest is growing and the tradition continues.” When the flag is raised on the mast in spring, it marks the beginning of a new season – and a sign that the sea continues its steady rhythm in the maritime heart of Hanko.
