Hanko’s maritime lifestyle is familiar to many, but few are as deeply immersed in its heart as Tuikku Karhu. She swims in the sea year-round and has built a community around Mummolaituri that supports and uplifts its members. Many older swimmers struggle to get into the water, but Mummolaituri makes it easy and safe. It has a gentle ramp, handrails, and steps, allowing people with mobility challenges to swim as well.
“People come to Mummolaituri even with walkers. By the end of 2025, an accessible wading pier was also completed next to it. Mummolaituri is more than just a pier—it’s a place where you can experience achievement and joy. On summer days, there can be dozens of swimmers lined up, and smiles are part of the atmosphere. Some days, there can be as many as 70 swimmers—and everyone still chats and laughs,” Karhu says.
A warm community has formed around Mummolaituri, sharing swimming experiences and water temperatures. “We have our own Facebook group with over 600 members. It’s like a family. Mummolaituri isn’t just a place. It’s something born from people that lives and breathes. When you have your own beloved community, it can carry you far,” Karhu praises.
